I really like putting together moodboards for my books. They help with inspiration and keep the vibe consistent as I write.
Devour the Dark is technically an urban fantasy romance that straddles the line between dark fantasy and modern fantasy. It begins in modern day New York City, and then, for most of the book, delves into the Reliquary – the dark undercity of Velmourne.
Velmourne is a gothic fantasy realm composed of two cities – the Night Market above and the Reliquary below, and in the Reliquary’s sleek, glittering, neon-gothic underworld, among outlawed gods and dark magic, everything is dangerous to the touch.
Velmourne itself is a world in ruin. Once the liminal boundary plane between our world and the Otherworld, it’s now a frayed thread holding the realms together. I wanted it to feel like a true realm of the other; strange, ancient and dangerous, with faery rules that sometimes don’t make sense to mortals. It’s a place of soaring palaces, crooked architecture and menacing black spires lit by neon and gasflame. While it’s kept pace with the modern realm in some respects, it’s still full of old world elegance and magic flourishes here in all its forms.
If I could offer a vibe, I’d say it’s William Gibson’s Neuromancer + the Nothing of the Neverending story + Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles.
In Devour the Dark, you’ll get to go deep into the Reliquary and come face to face with the monsters who live there. Trust me when I say there are no good guys – everyone is a villain, and the only way you can keep from being eaten alive…
…is to be first to the feast.
Devour the Dark is set in a dark, gothic modern fantasy realm. If you’re a fan of urban fantasy romance but you wish it was darker, grittier and hotter, where dark power thrives and the villains win – you’ll probably like this book.
